Researchers have found LED street lights to have produced a good balance between brightness and energy. It uses up half of electricity, produces more light and last up to five times longer than the high pressure sodium lamps, metal halide lamps and gas-based induction bulbs. LEDs are environmentally friendly too because it contains fewer toxins and no amount of mercury (unlike fluorescents). The downside with it is that it is costly due to the fact that it requires considerable energy and raw materials to produces and it is difficult to recycle, but because it is longer-lasting, the benefits of LEDs can overshadow the energy and raw material requirement in its manufacturing processes.
The Benefits of LED Street Lighting
If we think about economical costs, the purchase of LEDs for street lights can be a great investment as its longer-lasting life and bright light output can overshadow its hefty price. With its technology still improving, there are more rooms for improved LED street lighting options, but right now, it is considered as a better alternative to fluorescents which also last long but has little mercury content which is still not good for the environment. How can town, city and state governments pass on LEDs which can be easily maintained and does not emit poisonous gases?
